Year 12 Global Affairs
Friends International

From Friends International came Emmanuel and Amanda to talk to us about the childsafe movement. They spoke about orphanages in Cambodia and the reality about them. They explained to us that it is common for orphanage owners to pay families to lend their children to the orphanage for a while so then they can get tourists to donate to the the orphanage. They said that around 80% of the children have at least one parent alive.
We were also asked a series of questions based on different scenarios and we then had to answer whether we thought it was good or bad (eg. Paying orphans who are performing - bad & Give a sandwich to someone begging - good). We learnt the truth about volunteering and how places who receive donation can be lying to you about their circumstances.
